Greece is a completely different kind of yacht charter than the BVI, and it's one of my favorite places to sail. There's no customs between islands here either, so it's short hops from one gorgeous harbor town to the next, dinners run long, the wine is local, and every island somehow looks different from the last one. The fleet sails three different regions, the Ionian Sea out of Lefkas or Corfu, the Saronic Gulf near Athens, and the Cyclades from Paros, and since you can't sail between them in a single trip, I'll help you pick the right sea and the right base for the trip you're picturing.
Three seas, three very different weeks. You can't sail between them on a single charter, so pick the region first and your captain shapes the route from there around your group and the wind.
Charters here can depart from either port depending on the yacht, so this route covers the islands guests see most from both.
A short sail from Athens, with car-free islands, neoclassical harbor towns and easy distances between stops.
The Greece most people picture, whitewashed villages and open-water crossings between islands.
Fly into Athens International Airport (ATH) for the Saronic base. If your yacht departs from Paros, you can take a short 40 to 45 minute domestic flight from Athens, or a scenic high-speed ferry from Piraeus, about two and a half hours.
For the Ionian, fly into Corfu International Airport (CFU) if your yacht departs from Corfu, or Aktion National Airport (PVK) near Preveza if it departs from Lefkas, about a 20 minute transfer to the marina from there.
May through June, and September into early October, are the sweet spot, warm, less crowded, and calmer than peak summer. July and August bring the Meltemi, a strong seasonal wind that can make for a bumpier ride, still very sailable, just breezier.
A sleek Aquila power cat sleeping 8 across 4 cabins, based in Lavrion just outside Athens.
Quick note since we get asked: this is a different yacht from the one in our viral BVI video, same name, completely different boat, crew, and sea. If you've seen Tiamo online and want the details on this one, just ask.
